Sgrios Mass: Prerogative of Death
Death is predictable. It comes for every soul without
exception, and leaves no spark untouched. In this pursuit we find little
excitement - survey the landscape and know that all will, in time, come
to pass. Friends and foes. Enemies and lovers. Each will, eventually,
pass into the spirit realm some day without a return. In death we find,
of all things, order. We would find the same maddening control should
our lifespan stretch eternally. For, even Gods come to pass eventually.
Sgrios is so often heralded as the God of Death, but is
it so? It is more accurate though to praise his influence over decay
and chaos; the realms of which he reigns supreme and his influence is
unchecked. Because we so often find that death comes unannounced and
decay makes itself known before the body of the deceased finds it's home
beneath the soil, and because He keeps vigilant watch over the gates
of the spirit realm, Sgrios is often crowned the ruling God of Death.
Gods and mortals alike have sought tirelessly to apply
laws to life's end; be it Gramail’s foul attempts to interject his will
or man's feeble attempts to extend our time drawing breath. As much as
the Gods throw themselves against the eternal laws of permanence, we
squirm under the looming black forever of the after life and in doing so
delight our Lord. Here, we see, that it is not death that delights our
Lord, but the ever present shadow of it's unknown arrival that brings
Him joy. The chaos is for the living, and should we learn to take
pleasure in the uncertainty we will find a fearlessness in life that
will bolster our sparks and draw us ever closer to His good gifts.
